Follow organic dairy farmer Jonathan Gates as he reports weekly from his Vermont family farm. Howmars Farm is a certified organic dairy farm, one of many Organic Valley/CROPP Cooperative farmer members who supply the milk that goes into making Stonyfield's yogurts and smoothies. The entire family pitches in on this third-generation farm. Check out some of the happenings on his farm and post your comments. Jonathan loves to get feedback from readers.Newborn calf is the first of its kind on Howmars Farm
A brand new calf is born at Howmars Farm, one of the organic dairy farms that supplies Stonyfield Farm with organic milk. A thunderstorm turned this into an indoor birth, whereas usually the calves are born out in the field. This was the first bred calf on the Howmars Farm to have been born using sexed-semen. A few more heifers are currently bred with the sexed-semen. The cost of sex-selected semen is almost twice as high as the usual inseminations and, in ths video, farmer Jonathan explains a little bit on how it all works. Comments

Congratulations! Sounds like the sexed-semen will be a good addition to your bottom line.

What a happy time on the farm. Glad you have a heifer. It's cute and Willa seems to be a good mother.
