Follow organic dairy farmer Jonathan Gates as he reports weekly from his Vermont family farm. Howmars Farm is a certified organic dairy farm, one of many Organic Valley/CROPP Cooperative farmer members who supply the milk that goes into making Stonyfield's yogurts and smoothies. The entire family pitches in on this third-generation farm. Check out some of the happenings on his farm and post your comments. Jonathan loves to get feedback from readers.

Girls gone wild! The herd celebrates their annual springtime release on Howmars Farm

The "girls" in Jonathan's herd always go wild when the day finally comes each spring when the pastures are free of snow and the fences have been mended. Then, their caretaker Jonathan finally lets them out of the barnyard and onto the fresh grass--where they'll spend most of their daylight hours until the snow flies again in the fall.  Just like humans, the herd gets a little bit of "cabin fever" over the winter months--which are many way up there in northern Vermont.  Though they are out of their stalls and in the fresh air of the barnyard during the winter, they don't get to roam very far for those months. Jonathan also described the day a little earlier here in The Bovine Bugle.
